CAT Final Drive

Arena Machinery supplies aftermarket final drives — also called travel motors or track motors — compatible with Caterpillar excavators, from compact mini models through to large-scale earthmoving units. Each unit combines a hydraulic motor with a planetary reduction gearbox to convert hydraulic flow into the torque that turns your tracks. We stock both new aftermarket and professionally reconditioned options, tested before dispatch, at a fraction of dealer pricing.

What Does a CAT Final Drive (Travel Motor) Do?

A final drive is the sealed unit at each track that converts hydraulic pressure into the torque needed to move the excavator. It houses the hydraulic motor and planetary gearbox together, which is why CAT lists these as a single travel motor assembly rather than separate parts — a fault in either component usually means replacing the whole unit.

Understanding CAT’s Model & Generation Suffixes

CAT’s excavator range uses a few recurring codes worth knowing before you order. CR denotes Compact Radius — a reduced tail-swing design on mini excavators like the 303 CR, 304C CR, and 305 CR. A trailing letter (B, C, D, E, E2) marks the production generation on the same base number, as on the 307B through 307E2. On larger machines, GC (as on the 330GC) denotes CAT’s value-spec General Construction trim. Because generation and trim changes can each mean a different final drive even on the same base model number, always confirm your excavator’s full model code and serial number before ordering.

Not All Cat “200-Series” Numbers Are Excavators

If your machine is a CAT 239, 242B, 247, 249, 259D, 279D, or 287D/299D, it’s worth double-checking what you actually have: these model numbers belong to Cat’s skid steer loader and compact track loader (CTL) range, not the excavator line. They use a comparable track-drive component, but it’s a different part from an excavator final drive. See our dedicated skid steer final drive page for these models, or contact our team with your exact model and serial number to confirm which part you need.

Signs Your CAT Travel Motor Needs Attention

  • One track runs slower than the other, or the machine pulls to one side while travelling
  • Grinding, knocking, or whining noise from the track frame
  • Hydraulic oil leaking around the drive housing or seals
  • Metal particles visible in the drained gear oil
  • Reduced travel speed or the machine struggling on inclines it previously handled

More than one of these together usually means the internal gearing is already damaged, and continuing to run the machine risks spreading contamination through the rest of the hydraulic system.

Aftermarket vs. OEM — What You’re Actually Buying

We are an independent aftermarket supplier, not an authorised Caterpillar dealer. The Cat name on this page is used only to indicate compatibility — our final drives are not manufactured by, and are not affiliated with, Caterpillar Inc. Our aftermarket units are built to match OEM fit, form, and function for the relevant model, at meaningfully lower cost and typically faster availability than a dealer parts queue.

Extending the Life of Your Final Drive

Check final drive gear oil at the intervals in your excavator’s service schedule, and sooner if the machine works in water, mud, or heavy contamination. Low or degraded oil, along with worn seals, is one of the most common preventable causes of early final drive failure. If you’re unsure whether a leak is repairable or the unit needs full replacement, our final drive repair service team can assess it.

CAT Excavator Models We Cover

Our range spans CAT’s mini excavators — the 300.9, 301, 302, and 303 series (including CR variants) — through mid-size models like the 304 to 325 series, up to large machines including the 328, 329, 330 (D2/D3/DL/DLN/GC), 336, 345, 349, and E320. Final drives are only one part of the undercarriage and hydraulic system — if you’re also chasing a slow slew or turret issue, see our swing motor range. Use the model search above or contact our team with your machine’s exact model code and serial number to confirm fitment.

 Frequently Asked Questions

What is a final drive on a CAT excavator?
It’s the assembly at each track — a hydraulic motor and planetary gearbox combined — that converts hydraulic pressure into the torque needed to move the machine.

Is a final drive the same as a travel motor?
Yes — final drive, travel motor, and track motor refer to the same component. Caterpillar itself uses “travel motor” on many of its own parts diagrams, which is why both terms are used interchangeably.

Is a Cat 249D or 259D an excavator?
No — these are Cat’s compact track loader (skid steer) model numbers, not excavators. They use a related but separate track-drive part; see our skid steer final drive page for that range.

What causes a CAT final drive to fail?
Most failures trace back to worn seals letting contamination into the gear oil, low hydraulic fluid, or accumulated wear from heavy-duty use. Regular oil checks and prompt attention to leaks are the main ways to extend service life.

Should I choose a new or reconditioned final drive?
A reconditioned final drive costs less and suits machines in general operation, provided it’s pressure-tested and inspected. A new aftermarket unit suits high-hour or continuous-use applications where maximum life before the next rebuild matters more than upfront cost.

Are these genuine Caterpillar parts or aftermarket?
These are high-quality aftermarket parts, not genuine Caterpillar-manufactured components. We reference the Cat brand only for fitment purposes — we are an independent aftermarket supplier and are not affiliated with or endorsed by Caterpillar Inc.

Do you ship CAT final drives Australia-wide?
Yes, we ship aftermarket Cat-compatible final drives and travel motors across Australia from our Hallam, VIC facility.
